This year I decided to be more of a role model and practice what I preach. It is one thing to encourage my students to try new things and it is totally different experience to incorporate new tools into my own teaching. I decided this semester to video tape an introduction to my course and embed it on blackboard. Then for another course I created a voki, similar to the one on this page, to introduce myself and the course to my students.

A voki is a speaking avatar that you can embed on your website or blog and can be used as an effective teaching tool. Voki is a free service that allows you to create a custom avatar and add voice to your avatar. This tool will allow you to introduce technology to your students in a fun way. It motivates students to participate and create their own avatar, but most importantly voki can be used as an effective language tool. The voki sight has the text to speech feature for over 25 languages. One of the newer features is Voki Classroom which is a paid version of voki where a teacher can create and manage student and classroom accounts. Lesson plans are also available with many great ideas on how to incorporate voki in the classroom from k-12.
