Everything Google

One of my favorite courses to teach is Content Literacy. We were discussing search engines and what the teachers and their students were using in the classroom to search various content topics. I introduced Google Wonder Wheel and Google Squared in hopes of creating some dialog about these tools. I was surprised to learn that out of my 20 graduate students 15 were not familiar with these tools. What a wonderful teachable moment. After a short demonstration I asked the students to take 10 minutes to “play” with these tools. This hands on experience led to some great discussions on how to introduce these tools and at what grade level.

My advice to pre service teachers is to take some time to get to know these tools:

Google Squared is a search tool that allows you to customize your search results in a table.

Google Wonder Wheel allows people to visually see search phrases related to whatever they searched for initially in a graph like wheel. This reveals relevant terms which could be what they really were searching for orĀ  just give them extra data to lead them to extra information they may find useful.

Google Maps Google images, Google video, Google Earth and Google Lit Trips are some other Google tools worth investigating. I have used Google images throughout this blog.
